However, patients have a risk of anesthetic complications both during and after surgery. In the case of serious complications can cause death. Department of Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University has a system to monitor patients who received anesthesia within 24 hours after surgery to find and evaluate the complications that may be arise and resolve the problems with patient safety goals. The objective of this study was to investigate the anesthetic complications within 24 hours after surgery in Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University.

Methods: The study was a retrospective descriptive study. Data were collected from the anesthetic records of patients underwent anesthesia for surgery within 24 hours after surgery from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2009 with a total of 41,869 cases.

Results: There were a total cases of 308 anesthetic complications 127 cases in the year 2007 (out of a total of 13,549 cases) 75 cases in the year 2008 (out of a total of 14,132 cases) and 106 cases in the year 2009 (out of a total of 14,188 cases), representing an incidence of 93.7, 53.1 and 74.7 per 10,000 patient, respectively. Their average age were 39-45 years old, mainly females (50.3%), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status 1 (52.6%), receiving regional anesthesia (51.0%) and no underlying disease (59.7%). The most common anesthetic complications in study period, such as urinary retention was 41.7%, 34.7% and 26.4%, respectively. The second common complications in the year 2007 and 2009 include severe nausea / vomiting were 24.4% and 23.6%, respectively, however in the year 2008 showed the post dural puncture headache (PDPH) was 21.3%. The third common complications in all three years were the death (7.1%), severe nausea / vomiting (17.3%) and PDPH (13.2%), respectively.

Conclusion: The average incidence of anesthetic complications within 24 hours after surgery in the three years was 73.6 per 10,000. The top three of anesthetic complications were urinary retention, severe nausea / vomiting and post dural puncture headache, respectively.

Keywords: 24-hour postoperative visit, the incidence, anesthetic complications
}, number={4}, journal={Srinagarind Medical Journal}, author={Kumhom, Radda and Ratanasuwan Yimyaem, Panaratana and Sinkueakunkit, Akkharawat and Palachewa, Khochakron and Polsena, Lumpai and Simajareuk, Suthannee}, year={2013}, month={Dec.}, pages={490–496} }
