Multiple Pregnancy in Srinagarind Hospital.

Abstract

Retrospective study of multiple pregnancies in Srinagarind Hospital from July 1977 to December 1986 revealed 156 twin pregnancies and 1 triplet pregnancy.  The incidence of twins and triplets was 1:118 and 1:18363 births respectively.  Maternal age ranged from 16 to 42 years with the majority between 26-30 years, in gravida 2 and parity 0.  There were high incidence of no antenatal care, preterm delivery and undiagnosed cases in antepartum period.  The fetal presentation during labor were vertex, vertex in 52.9%, only 28% had normal delivery of both fetuses and the incidence of operative obstetrics was high.  The most common obstetrics complication was preterm delivery.  The incidence of cesarean section in multiple pregnancies was 14.6%.  Most of the mothers were hospitalized for 3 days.  Sex ratio of twins was 108.  There were 72% low birth weight fetuses.  Neonatal death among the fetuses weighed less than 1,500 grams was 59% and the survivors required long intensive care in the neonatal unit.
