การแพทย์ได้มีวิวัฒนาการทั้งในแง่ด้านองค์ความรู้ เทคโนโลยีเครื่องมือทางการแพทย์ ทำให้เกิดเทคนิคการผ่าตัดใหม่ๆเช่น การผ่าตัดลงแผลผ่าตัดผ่านช่องทางธรรมชาติของผู้ป่วย (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery: NOTES) ซึ่งทำให้ไม่เกิดแผลเป็นที่สังเกตุเห็นได้จากภายนอก ดังนั้นจึงทำให้ได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้นในปัจจุบัน
การรักษาโรคในทางหู คอ จมูก ก็เช่นกันสามารถผ่าตัดผ่านทางช่องทางธรรมชาติได้ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการผ่าตัดซ่อมเยื่อแก้วหู ผ่าตัดซ่อมแซมกระดูกหูด้วยการส่องกล้องผ่านทางรูหู ในส่วนของจมูกก็มีการผ่าตัดไซนัส ผ่าตัดเนื้องอกบริเวณฐานกะโหลกศีรษะด้วยการส่องกล้องเช่นกัน นอกจากนี้ยังมีการผ่าตัดไทรอยด์ด้วยการส่องกล้องผ่านทางช่องปาก การผ่าตัดด้วยเทคนิคนี้ถือว่าเป็น minimally invasive technique ช่วยให้ผู้ป่วยฟื้นตัวได้เร็ว คุณภาพชีวิตดีขึ้น
