ความสำคัญของปัญหา
มีการศึกษาในประเทศไทยเกี่ยวกับภาวะหย่อนสมรรถภาพทางเพศในชายไทยอายุ 40-70 ปี พบความชุกถึงร้อยละ 37.52 ในต่างประเทศมีการรายงานความชุกของภาวะหย่อนสมรรถภาพทางเพศหลายการศึกษา การศึกษาที่ถูกอ้างอิงจำนวนมากได้แก่ Massachusette Male Aging Study(MMAS) รายงานความชุกของภาวะหย่อนสมรรถภาพทางเพศ ที่ร้อยละ 52 โดยในจำนวนนี้เป็นแบบรุนแรงปานกลางถึงมากร้อยละ 34 การศึกษาจาก National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) รายงานความชุกของภาวะหย่อนสมรรถภาพทางเพศร้อยละ 18.4 โดยความชุกเพิ่มขึ้นจากร้อยละ 6.5 ในเพศชายอายุ 20-39 ปีเป็นร้อยละ 77.5 ในเพศชายอายุมากกว่า 75 ปี3
