The Prevalence of Job Burnout among Residents of Srinagarind Hospital

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Residents play an important role in managing patients at Srinagarind hospital. Workload and personal problems could impact working competency and lead to job burnout. This study aimed to examine prevalence and associated factors of job burnout among residents in Srinagarind hospital, of the academic year 2016.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted with the 336 residents, who were trained at Srinagarind hospital. Paper-based and online self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. Statistical analyses were performed by SPSS version 19.0 and STATA version 10 using frequency, percentage, median , interquartile range, Odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, Pearson’s chi-square test , Fisher’s exact test and Mann-Whitney U test.                

Results: The response rate was 46.43% (156/336).The prevalence of Job burnout in the residents were 7.69% Factors associated with the burnout were having bad relationship with healthcare team (OR= 28.60, 95%CI:1.30-1697.73) ,having insufficient support from medical advisors (OR=3.76, 95%CI:1.17-12.08) and extra-hour work (p=0.038).

Conclusions: The residents experienced job burnout were 7.69%. Factors associated with the burnout were having bad relationship with healthcare team , insufficient support from medical advisors and extra-hour work.
