Abstract
AbstractA prospectve data collection for acute poisoning cases was conducted in the hospitals in 3 Amplhurs in Khon Kaen province to compare the differences in poisoning patterns. Amphur Ban Phai gave the highest rate of poisoning (1.97) per 1,000 hospital visits and Amphur Nam Pong, the highest incidence rate of poisoning (95.4) per 100,000 population per year. The major type of poisoning agents found in Amphur Ban Phai was poisonous animals (51%) which were poisonous snakes in particular, whereas it was agricultural chemicals (48%) in Amphur Nam Pong. While about 80 percent of all poisonings in Amphur Ban Phai were unintentional poisonings, more than half (53%) in Amphur Nam Pong were intentional poisonings (suicidal gesture). In Amphur Muang where the hospital rate (0.47 per 1000 visits) and the incidence rate (73.9 per 100,000 population) of poisoning were the lowest of the 3 Amphurs, agricultural chemicals and therapeutic mishaps were the major poisoning agents involved and also more than half ( 55%) of all poisoning cases were intentional exposures of which 49% were suicidal gestures. In conclusion, differences of poisoning patterns were find out the cause of these differences.
