Evaluation of Leprosy control in Province in Region 5 Thailand, 1985 – 1994
Abstract
The prevalence of leprosy in Region 5 Thailand, was decreased from 13.4 per 10,000 population in the year 1985 to 1.9 per 10,000 population in 1994 after the implementation of multidrug therapy in 1984. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of MDT implementation on the decrease of prevalence reate and detection rate of leprosy in Region 5 from 1984 to 1994. Data collected by supervisors of 5 provinces.
The results revealed that MDT implementation could cover total registered cases of leprosy in 1988. These enabled prevalence – rate declined at 11.1% and 11.3% annually prior and after such coverage. Detection rate of new cases was not declined burying the forest three years after that it was declining 8.7% per year. The increasing of proportion of multibacillary cases and the decreasing of proportion of children among newly detected cases and the decreasing of proportion of children among newly detected cases together with mean age at onset indicated natural decline of leprosy as resulted from MDT, although deformity rate was not declined. Mor actions support on training and health education are needed in order to reach the goal “Leprosy free area”.
