Effectiveness and acceptability of Szontagh’s IUD and Tcu380A IUD in Thai woman at Khon Kaen province.
Abstract
Background : More than one hundred million baht per year were paid for intrauterine device (IUD) service Thailand. A new type of IUD with the same efficacy but inexpensive and domestically producible is needed to decrease negative trade-balance of our country.
Objectives : To study the effectiveness and acceptability (pregnancy rate, expulsion rate, complication, and discontinuation rate) of Szontaghûs IUD compared to Tcu380A in Thai woman at Khon Kaen provice.
Design : Cohort study
Settings : Family Planning Unit, Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University and Health Promotion Center, Region 6, Khon Kaen.
Participants : 132 woman in Szontagh’s IUD group and 131 woman in TCu380A IUD group were recruited.
Main outcome measures : Pregnancy rate, expulsion rate, and discontinuation rate were compared at 1 year between the two types of IUD.
Results : Pregnancy rate, expulsion rate, and discontinuation rate in Szontaghûs IUD group were 3.8% , 22.7% and 24.2% compared to 0% , 6.1% and 16.0% in Tcu380A IUD group, respectively.
Conclusions : This study showed that the Szontagh’s IUD had more pregnancy rate, expulsion rate, and discontinuation rate than Tcu380A. In spite of small sample size, all of them were statistically significant different.
