Abstract

Background and Objective : Currently, HIV-infected disease is still the major problem of public health. Most of patients do not have knowledge and understanding about AIDs, especially in HIV-infected pediatric patients. Education and verbal counseling for HIV infection may not be enough for knowing and remembering of them. The objective of this study was to develop animation for HIV-infected pediatric patients.

Methods : This study was a one group pre-test and post-test experimental design. Pediatric patients both disclosed and undisclosed HIV-infection, aged 8-15 years old were included in the study. Data were collected from October 2011 to February 2012, in out-patient department of HIV clinic at Sakolnakorn and Kalasin hospital. After the HIV-infected pediatric patients watched the animation, their knowledges of HIV infection were evaluated and the satisfactions were also assessed by patients and medical teams.

Results :  Forty-four HIV-infected pediatric patients (20 boys, 24 girls) were participated. After watching the animation, the scores of patients' knowledge for HIV/AIDs, antiretroviral drug usage and behaviors increased significantly (mean±SD = 8.59±1.76 vs 10.63±1.98, respectively, p<0.001). The scores of patients' knowledge in two divided groups (8-12 and 13-15 years old) were also significantly increased after watching the animation (p<0.001), but no statistically significant difference between groups.  The satisfaction level with the developed animation were in the high to the highest levels. Most satisfaction from pediatric patients was animation designs and most of medical teams was a good step of story running.

Conclusions : The animation could be a tool to improve knowledge for medical care in HIV-infected pediatric patients.
