Cancer Survival Rate of Patients in Loei Hospital, Loei Province, Thailand

Abstract

Objective:  Cancer patients’ survival rate  in Loei  Hospital has not been reported before. Therefore, this study was designed to establish  the survival rate of cancer patients admitted in Loei  Hospital, Loei Province.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. Data from  1,326 cases registered in the Loei Hospital-based cancer registry between January 1, 2017 and  December 31, 2018 was extracted, and patients  followed up until December 31, 2020. Survival rate was  estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. We reported the median survival time with  95% confidence interval.

Result: Male cancer patients’ survival rates  1 year after diagnosis,  were Liver and bile duct cancer 22.7%, Lung cancer 27.1%, Colorectal cancer 79.1%, Prostate cancer 83.8% and Skin cancer 92.9%. Survival rate of cancer patients  3 year post-diagnosis were Liver and bile duct cancer 9.7%, Lung cancer 9.8%, Colorectal cancer 56.3%, Prostate cancer 50.9% and Skin cancer 84.6%. Female cancer patients’  survival rates  1 year after diagnosis,  were Breast cancer 94.5%, Liver and bile duct cancer 29.1%, Colorectal cancer 78.0%, Cervical cancer 76.1% and Ovarian cancer 90.1%. Survival rate of female cancer patients at 3 year after diagnosis were Breast cancer 81.6%, Liver and bile duct cancer 15.3%, Colorectal cancer 56.2%, Cervical cancer 54.2% and Ovarian cancer 80.8%.

Conclusion: The cancers with the  highest survival rates were  breast cancer, skin cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.  The lowest survival rates were  liver and bile duct cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and cervix cancer. Therefore,  awareness of the survival rates  of each type of cancer should focus us on early detection by attending screening and examination regularly.
