Abstract

Weight gain induced by psychotropic drugs is a common cause of non-adherence in psychiatric patients. Antipsychotics, Antidepressants and Mood stabilizers are classes of psychotropic drugs that increase body weight by unknown mechanism. Patient with weight gain could lead to have metabolic disorders and obesity. Cardiovascular disorders and increase mortality can result from this problem. Monitoring of body weight and metabolic parameters  are essential keys for selection of appropriate method for prevention and management. No drugs are approved by FDA for this indication, but life style modification and switching to agents that have least increasing of body weight are suitable for provide better outcomes to psychiatric patients who suffering from weight gain problem after therapy with psychotropic drugs.
