Proportion of Users and Satisfaction Level among Medical Students Toward 24/7 Common Learning Space of Medical Library, Khon Kaen University

Abstract

Background and Objective : Medical library ,Khon Kaen University has offered the 24/7 common learning space for medical students. This project has received good responses with 168 times a day of usage on average but there was no any data to demonstrate proportion between used and non-used ones of the area. Therefore the objective of this study was to study  1) Proportion of  used and non-used of the 24/7 common learning space 2) Satisfaction toward the service area

Methods : This was a descriptive study. The study population were 1,211 medical students and Calculated sample size by stratified sampling technique and the result were 418 medical students.  Self-administered questionnaire containing 4 parts; 1) General information and the usage 2) Levels of satisfaction toward the space 3) Opinions 4) Suggestions were used. The data were analyzed by SPSS-PC V.17.0 for frequencies, proportions, median, interquartile range and 95% confidence interval.

Results : The response rate was 88.0% (368/418). The study revealed that the medical students’ usage was 53.8% (95%CI : 48.6,59.0).  (“Use” refers to ones who had accessed the area after 8.00 pm on weekday or after 4.00 pm on weekend and stays longer than 30 minutes)  Most users accessed the area from 8.00 pm to 10.00 pm on weekday and from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm on weekend. The top 3 “very satisfied” rating were opening hours (77.2%), adequate lighting (70.1%) and allowing to bring food and beverage into the area (69.0%).
The majority of the users accessed the service area for reading (89.3%). The least satisfied service was the light of the path from the area to the parking lot (19.8%). The most important reason  for not coming was because of inadequate space (23.8%). The top ranked reading behavior of medical students was reading in quiet environment (69.8%).

Conclusion : 53.8% of medical students used the 24/7 common learning space. The overall satisfaction over the 4 major categories was “very satisfied”.
