Burden of Mother of Patients with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at Out-Patient Clinic, Srinagarind Hospital

Objectives : To study the burden of mother of patients with attention-dificit hyperacfinty disorder and its associated factors.
Methods : This study was descriptive cross-sectional study using self-report questionnaire “Zarit Burden Interview Thai version”. Data collection was performed at the Child Psychiatric Outpatient unit, Srinakarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, during April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015. The inclusion criterion was the mothers who had the children with DSM-IV-TR (diagnosed by psychiatrist and senior psychiatric residents) attention-deficit hyperactivity. The authors analyzed the data in percentage and The Chi-Square test using SPSS for Windows version 17.0.
Results: Fifty-one mothers were included in the study. Their mean age was 40 years. They were married (n = 39; 76.5%), graduated with bachelor degree (n = 22; 23.5%). The mostly patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder were males (n = 37; 72.5%), mean age was 9 years. The study on the burden of mother of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder revealed most of Zarit Burden Interview total score was in the group of “Low minimum” (mean = 0.90 , SD = 1.00). The aspect of Personal strain are in “Low minimum” (mean = 1.17, SD = 1.07) , Privacy conflict are in “Low minimum” (mean = 0.61 , SD = 0.99) , Guilt are in “Low minimum” (mean = 1.17 , SD = 1.23) and Uncertain attitude are in “Low minimum” (mean = 0.63 , SD = 0.71). The factor that significant associated with burden score of mother of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is the general health questionnaire (Thai GHQ - 12) score of mother (P-value = 0.006, c2-test = 7.677 ). Conclusion : The majority of mother mother of patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder perceive the burden in “Low minimum” and the general health questionnaire (Thai GHQ - 12) score of mother are the significant factor that associated the burden score.
