The Proportions of Clinical-Year Medical Students of Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University who have Accurate Knowledge about “Zika Virus Disease”

and currently outbreak inmany countries including Thailand. Thus, medical students should have accurate knowledge about Zika virus disease and be able to educate patients. This study aimed to examine the proportions of clinical-year medical students of Srinagarind Hospital who had accurate knowledge about Zika virus disease and sources of information about emerging infectious diseases.
Method: Descriptive study at Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University
Population and sample: A total of 448 clinical-year medical students were chosen which was sampled into 281. Tools: Self-administered questionnaire. Data analyses: SPSS Version 19.0 and Epi Info v. 3.5.4 was used to analyze frequency, proportions, percentage, median, minimum, maximum, interquartile range and 95% CI.
Results: The response rate was 85.8%. In all, 89 (36.9%) clinical-year medical students had accurate knowledge about Zika virus disease (95%CI 30.8%-43.1%)and significantly associated with the clinical year (p = 0.009). The most commonly reported source of information about emerging infectious diseases was social media (75.5%). The most desired source of obtaining knowledge about Zika virus disease was Facebook (61.8%).
Conclusions: One-third of the clinical year medical students of Srinagarind Hospital had accurate knowledge about Zika virus disease. The main source of information about emerging infectious diseases was social media and the most desired source of obtaining knowledge about Zika virus disease was Facebook.
