The Proportions of Healthcare Providers Who Have Accurate Clinical Practices on Antimicrobial Resistant Patients in Srinagarind Hospital

Background and Objective: Nowadays, antimicrobial resistant organisms are increasing. Accurate clinical practices on antimicrobial resistant patients could prevent spreading, and decrease infected rate and death. This study aimed to examine: 1) the proportions of accurate clinical practices on antimicrobial resistant patients of healthcare providers in Srinagarind hospital; and 2) the most clinical practices which have always and never performed.
Method : Descriptive study at Srinagarind hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. Study population: All 539 doctors and 331 clinical-year medical students in Srinagarind hospital. Tools: A self-administered questionnaire was used, comprising three parts; demographic data, clinical practices on antimicrobial resistant patients, and additional opinion in regard to the practice on antimicrobial resistant patients. Analysis: SPSS-PC ver.17 and Epi Info v. 3.5.4 were used to calculate the descriptive statistics: percentage, median, interquartile range, and 95% CI.
Results : The response rate was 34.25% (298/870), of which 15.03% (81/539) were doctors and 65.56% (217/331) were clinical-year medical students. In all, 0.82% (95%CI: 0.14, 3.25) of the participants had accurate clinical practices on antimicrobial resistant patients. All of those were medical students. The most reported practice as being always performed was placing long sleeve gowns in an infection stained cloth bucket (65.1%), whilst the practice which never performed was that not placing charts or papers on the patient’s bed or desk (12.6%).
Conclusions : A very small number of the healthcare providers in Srinagarind hospital had accurate clinical practices on antimicrobial resistant patients. The clinical practice guidelines need to be promoted and the healthcare providers need to be encouraged to utilize and implement the best clinical evidence into their routine practices.
