EVALUATION OF COMMUNITY PHARMACY PERSONNEL IN PHARMACEUTIACL SERVICES USING THE SIMULATED PATIENT

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the pharmaceutical services of community pharmacy personnel using a simulated patient. Data was collected by using a simulated patient with a common cold. The simulated patients were randomized to visit 56 community pharmacies located in Phayao Province and evaluated the pharmaceutical services into 3 domains; (1) History taking to obtain vital information from the patient; (2) Information on the medicine label; (3) Medication dispensing and patient counseling. The results showed that the majority of the patient’s information obtained from history taking was the chief compliant (n=52; 92.9%) followed by; associated symptoms (n=40; 71.4%) and severity of disease (n=18; 32.1%), respectively. The information most commonly written on medicine labels included the route of administration (n=45; 80.4%); medicine indication (n=42; 75.0%) and drug precautions (n=24; 42.9%), respectively. The most common information given while medication was dispensed or during patient counseling was medicine indication (n=57; 91.1%) followed by; dosage instruction and medicine direction (n=50; 89.3%) and adverse drug reaction (n=37; 66.1%), respectively. This study concluded that the pharmaceutical services in several community pharmacies were not up to standard. There were many issues that needed to be promoted for community pharmacies to improve pharmaceutical services and approach a level of quality pharmacy standards.
