Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the Program for Promoting Prescribing Herbal Medicine Behaviors among health care providers in sub-district health promoting hospitals in Sukhothai Province. A mixed-methods research design was used. Phase 1 involved program development by examining factors influencing prescribing herbal medicine behaviors among 230 health care providers using multiple regression analysis, and by interviewing 10 health care providers, with qualitative data analyzed using content analysis. The findings were then integrated with the KAP model and self-efficacy theory to develop the program. Phase 2 tested the effectiveness of the program using a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design over a 6-month period among 100 health care providers in sub-district health promoting hospitals. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test. Phase 3 examined satisfaction with the program among 10 health care providers in sub-district health promoting hospitals and 10 patients who received herbal medicines. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The results showed that five factors had statistically significant effects on prescribing herbal medicine behaviors: attitude toward herbal medicines (beta = 0.163), knowledge of herbal medicines (beta = 0.159), policy perception (beta = 0.128), confidence in the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines (beta = 0.120), and perceived problems and barriers (beta = -0.114). The qualitative data identified three related domains: individual, social, and patient-related factors. The program consisted of five activities: “policy awareness,” “learning about herbal medicines,” “experience sharing,” “collaborative problem solving,” and “reminders.” After the intervention, the mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and prescribing herbal medicine behaviors increased significantly at the 0.001 level. Both health care providers and patients were satisfied with the program. They perceived the program as comprehensive, useful, and feasible for implementation in practice. Treatment was perceived to be effective, and no adverse effects were reported.
