The Design and Creation of an Economic Car Prototype

The research aimed to design and build an economic car prototype to enter the 2010 Shell Eco Marathon in Malaysia and to evaluate the performance of teamwork among teachers and students. The project was funded by both government and private organizations. The research focused on technical aspects and project management. In terms of the technical aspects, the design of the prototype followed the specification for an economic car, which meant that the fuel consumption should be no more than 1 liter of petrol per 500 kilometers with a maximum carbon dioxide emission at 120 grammars per kilometer. The capacity of the gasoline engine could not exceed 1300 cc. The complete prototype consumed 1 liter of petrol per 440 kilometers. In terms of the project management, SPSS programs were used to evaluate its performance. The result showed that the project was rated at the highly satisfactory level (Level A) for the size of the project, the quality of work, and the participation of the parties involved. The drawbacks were found in the categories of resources and technology.
