Outcomes of the Quality of Life-Promoting Activities of Adolescents with Cleft Lip and Palate in Khon Kaen Province

Background and Objective: Adolescents are in the social relationship-building phase, have high independence, and self-dominance, which are aspects of the Quality of Life, (QoL) therefore, organizing and evaluating the outcomes of life-promoting activities of adolescents with cleft lip and palate (CLP) are important. This study aimed to the outcomes of activities to promote the QoL of CLP adolescents in Khon Kaen Province.
Methods: A descriptive research. Fifteen adolescents and 17 parents were selected using purposive sampling. For the morning activities, the adolescents were divided into 3 groups, and each group rotationally attended the health, psychological, and social-promoting activities. The parents were divided into 2 groups, each rotationally watching the educational and encouragement video. In the afternoon, all the groups were scrambled into 4 groups and participated in the psychosocial activities. The data were collected by observing the behavior of the adolescents, assessing the knowledge of parents at before and after watching the videos, and evaluating the satisfaction of both adolescents and parents using observation, knowledge quiz, and satisfaction questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical values, percentages, mean and standard deviation, and paired t-test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: 15 adolescents participated in the activities, 8 were male, with an average age of 16.07 ± 3.06 years old, all of whom received the medical examination, under the orthodontic treatment, had a high level of self-confidence, participated in conversations related to their future, understood the difference between individuals, participated in planning and strategic thinking, can concentrate, can memorize things, felt they were part of a group, and can enjoy the activities. The Parents' knowledge was increased at a statistically significant level at 0.005. The participants had a high level of satisfaction (x̅=4.73, S.D.=0.41)
Conclusion: The outcomes of QoL-promoting activities were good for both the adolescents and their parents. Activities like that should be organized more frequently to improve the QoL of adolescents with CLP.
