Abstract

Background and Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) knee is caused by break down of articular cartilage, which leads to disability in elderly. Total knee arthroplasty is a successful procedure to improve health function and return to daily normal activities of the patients. The purpose of this study was to study the clinical outcomes of simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty in osteoarthritis patients in Roi Et Hospital.

Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study. All data were reviewed and collected from medical records of patients who had knee osteoarthritis and underwent bilateral total knee arthroplasty at Roi Et Hospital between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022. All patients were followed up at 2ndweek, 6thweek, 3rdand 6thmonths. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way repeated-measures ANOVA.

Results: Twenty-nine patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were 72.41% female, mean age 63.44 ± 7.61 years. The clinical symptoms of preoperative patients, mostly knee flexion and bilateral knee extension passed the assessment criteria, and 100% of Kellgren-Lawrence score grade 4. The results of surgical treatment showed that all patients had improvement in 6 months without complications. Comparison mean of symptom scores and movement after 4 repeated measurements (2ndweek, 6thweek, 3rdand 6thmonths) found that there was at least one pair was statistically significant (p< 0.001).

Conclusion: Osteoarthritis knee patients who underwent with simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty had improvement in clinical outcomes and knee mobility after surgical treatment and without complications.
