Abstract

Background and Objective:  Patients with Major depressive disorder have a  high risk of suicide. Patient monitoring is therefore important in reducing suicidal risk. The purpose of this study was to study the results of using nursing guidelines for telemedicine monitoring of Major depressive disorder patients with high risk for suicide.

Methods: One-group quasi-experimental study. The sample group consisted of Major depressive disorder patients with high risk of suicide. Among patients who came to receive outpatient treatment at the psychiatric Unit at Srinagarind Hospital between November 2021 - January 2023, a sample group of 33 people was selected according to eligibility criteria using telemedicine follow-up  weekly and 1-2 times for a period of 12 weeks. Results were measured before and after using the guidelines using an 8-question suicide risk assessment (8Q). Suicidal risk scores were analyzed before and after treatment using generalized estimating equation statistics.

Results: Using nursing guidelines for telemedicine monitoring of Major depressive disorder patients with high risk for suicide resulted in a statistically significant reduction in  suicidal risk scores, decreasing from baseline values of 30.67 to 7.61 and 5.88 (p < 0.001) after 1 month and 3 months of experimentation, respectively. Moreover, patients reported a high level of satisfaction with  telephone follow-up .

Conclusion: Applying telehealth monitoring of depressed patients is helpful in reducing suicide risk and improving the satisfaction of Major depressive disorder patients.
