Abstract

When verbal communication is unable to fully and profoundly convey meaning, therapeutic songwriting emerges as a significant approach in music therapy, allowing participants to express their emotions, feelings, and thoughts through the creative process of composing songs that reflect their experiences and needs. Numerous studies have highlighted the effectiveness and benefits of this approach across all age groups, from children to individuals in the final stages of life. This scholarly article aims to explore and provide an overview of therapeutic songwriting, covering key topics such as its definition, significance, and advantages; types of therapeutic songwriting; implementation procedures; characteristics of suitable participants; technologies used; safety measures and approaches for handling possible difficulties in therapeutic songwriting.
