Background and objectives: Core volunteers at the TO BE NUMBER ONE Friend Center must possess strong mental resilience to effectively care for members who utilize the center’s services sustainably and efficiently. Strengthening mental resilience is therefore a crucial factor that enables volunteers to perform their duties to their fullest potential. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of the “I can” program on the mental resilience of core volunteers at the TO BE NUMBER ONE friend center.
Methods: This study employed a research and development design incorporating a randomized controlled trial, conducted during the 2025–2026 fiscal year. The sample consisted of 106 TO BE NUMBER ONE volunteer leaders (aged 18–24 years) from senior high schools and vocational colleges, equally divided into an experimental group and a control group (n = 53 per group). Outcome measures included psychological resilience, mindfulness, and quality of life (EQ-5D-5L and VAS). Data was analyzed using intention-to-treat (ITT) principle. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to compare between-group differences and estimate relative risks (RR)
Results: The evaluation of the "I can” program revealed that the experimental group’s psychological resilience increased significantly and was higher than that of the control group at the 1-month and 2-month follow-ups (p<0.05). At the 2-month follow-up, the RR was 0.42 (95%CI=0.267-0.685; p<0.001). Furthermore, the experimental group showed significantly higher levels of mindfulness at all post-intervention time points (p<0.05) and reported significantly better quality of life scores at the 2-month follow-up compared to the control group (p<0.05).
Conclusions: The "I can” program is effective in enhancing psychological resilience, mindfulness, and quality of life among youth volunteer leaders. These findings suggest the program's potential for application in mental health promotion for similar youth populations.
