หลักการและวัตถุประสงค์: ในประเทศไทยคนพิการทางการเห็นจำนวนมากต้องมีผู้ดูแลช่วยเหลือในการดำเนินชีวิต การศึกษาในต่างประเทศพบว่าผู้ดูแลคนพิการทางการเห็นส่วนใหญ่รู้สึกว่ามีภาระและมีภาวะซึมเศร้า แต่ยังไม่มีการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ในประเทศไทย การศึกษานี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อประเมินภาระในการดูแลและภาวะซึมเศร้าของผู้ดูแลคนพิการทางการเห็นในชุมชน
วิธีการศึกษา: อาสาสมัครคือผู้ดูแลของคนพิการทางการเห็นในอำเภอกุฉินารายณ์ จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ จำนวน 114 ราย (อายุเฉลี่ย 43.5 ปี) ประเมินภาระในการดูแลและภาวะซึมเศร้าของอาสาสมัครด้วยแบบวัดภาระในการดูแล (Zarit-CBS) ฉบับภาษาไทย (คะแนนเต็ม 88 คะแนน) และแบบวัดภาวะซึมเศร้า (CES-D) ฉบับภาษาไทย (คะแนนเต็ม 60 คะแนน) ตามลำดับ โดย Zarit-CBS ≤ 20 คะแนนถือว่าอาสาสมัครไม่รู้สึกมีภาระในการดูแล และ CES-D ≥ 22 คะแนนแสดงให้เห็นว่าอาสาสมัครต้องถูกประเมินเพิ่มเติมเพื่อประเมินภาวะซึมเศร้า
ผลการศึกษา: ค่าคะแนนเฉลี่ยของ Zarit-CBS และ CES-D เท่ากับ 7.3±5.5 และ 4.9±3.5 คะแนน ตามลำดับ จากอาสาสมัคร 114 ราย มีอาสาสมัคร 5 ราย (ร้อยละ 4.4) ที่รู้สึกว่าการดูแลคนพิการเป็นภาระเล็กน้อย (Zarit-CBS อยู่ในช่วง 21-40 คะแนน) และมีอาสาสมัครเพียง 1 ราย (ร้อยละ 0.9) ที่อาจมีภาวะซึมเศร้า (CES-D เท่ากับ 33 คะแนน)
สรุป: ผู้ดูแลคนพิการทางการเห็นในอำเภอกุฉินารายณ์ส่วนใหญ่ได้รับการประเมินว่าการดูแลญาติของตนไม่เป็นภาระ และไม่จัดว่าเป็นผู้มีภาวะซึมเศร้า
