Abstract

n 1985, sesame line "Hnanni 25/160" from FAO was introduced and subsequent pure line selection was underataken at Ubon Ratchathani Field Crops Research Center. the selected line had 3-5 branches with early maturing characteristics of 80-85 days and was named "Hananni 25/160/85-9". Regional yield evaluation trials were consecutively conducted at various field crops research centers, including farmer's fields during 1986-1991. It was obviously confirmed that "Hnanni 25/160/85-9" showed high yield of 139 kg./rai which was 25% higher than "Maha Sarakham 60", the present recommended variety, and was 22% higher than the local red variety Seed was large (3.16 gm./1,000 seeds) and seed color was evenly red, meeting foreign market requirement. Further more, it was resistant to bacterial wilt disease (Pseudomonas solanacearum) and to major insect pests of sesame such as leaf folder, broad mite and fruit sucking bugs. This promising line was certified and registered by the Department of Agriculture as Ubon Ratchathani 1, on January 19, 1993.
