Development and Testing of Kenaf and Jute Fibre Ribboners
Abstract
Three prototypes of kenaf and jute fibrer ribboners; C.P., Tropical Product and AED models, were tested and evaluated based on their machine performance bases. Accordingly, the three ribboners showed to yield low efficiencies. Base on its ease of operation features, TROPICAL PRODUCT model was selected as an ideal model for future modifications to achieve the machine performance optimatily. Two main parameters; number of drum lugs and drum speeds were selected as a basis for the modifications. Consequently, three drums with their corresponding drum lugs of 3, 4 and were fabricated, installed and tested at the drum speeds of 570, 650 and 700 rpm.
Based on the findings, it was found that ribboner with 4 drum lugs and operated of the drum speed of 650 rpm yielded the best performance, especially in terms of machine capacity and fibre quality. Accordingly, the average machine capacity was found to be 800 kg/hr (fresh stems). The break - even - amount for planting area of this modified TROPICAL PRODUCT model ribboner was found to be 0.53 ha/year.
