Yellow water pan traps (YWPT) of 16 cm in diameter were used insteas of the standard 60 cm diameter traps fo rthis study. YWPT were set on teh transplanting plots of RD 7m RD 1, RD 21, RD 23, RD 25 and SP 60 rice varieties. No insecticide was applied. The brown planthopper (BPH) number in YWPT and on the rice plots was counted weekly. The experiments were carried out a Phathumthani Rice Research Centre; Ban Pho, Chachoengsao and Lam Luk Ka, Phatum Thani in teh dry and wet seasons of 1989 and 1990. The result showed high correlation (64.25%) between the number of BPH adult in YWPT and on the rice plots. In the tillering stage, when the BPH adult were more than 3 insects/trap/wee, then 2-3 weeks later the outbreak of BPH was found on the rice plots. But there wereno BPH outbreak on teh fields which had plenty of the mirid bug, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter. Nine YWPT are recommended for adequate sampling. YWPT should be used in IPM as a tool for prediction of BPH outbreak on rice field.
