Abstract

The effects of nitrogen fertilizer and weed competition on yield components of maize were determined experimentally. An application of 10 kg/rai of nitrogen fertilizer led to a reduction in the percentage of aborted ears, higher seed weed per ear and taller maize plants. On the other hand, extending the duration of weed competition had the reverse effect on all three yield components. As final maize grain yield is closely related to these three yield parameters, both weed competition and nitrogen applicatiion are major determinants of yield.
