Abstract

Cercospora canescens EII. & Mart. is capable of producing a red pigmented toxin when grown on potato dextrose broth. A concentrated acetone extract of the puried toxin showed the deep yellow band, RF value 0.71, suggesting that it is cercosporin. An extract of the toxin affected root elongation and seed germination of both resistant and susceptible varieties of mungbean. The purified toxin had greater effect in inhibiting root and reducing seed germination of the same verities. It is indicating that the toxin produced by the fungus as non-host specific toxin.
