Abstract

VA Mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi can increase leguminous plant growth by enhancing nutrient absorbtion ability. The effetiveness of the VAM fungi is influenced by three main factors : (i) The different types of VAM fungi vary in their effectiveness. (ii) In fertile soils the response to the use of VAM fungi will often be minimal; best results are obtained from soils with a high level of nutrients in unavailable forms. (iii) If the indiginous VAM fungi are already effective little response may result from applying mor VAM fungi to the soil.
The paper describes the importance of the abouve three factors on teh effectiveness of the VAM fungi with regard to Thai conditions and in reference to the growth of a number of economically important leguminous cash crops including peanut, soybean and mungbean.
