Sugarcane variety "U Thong 1"

Abstract

Sugarcane variety U Thong 1 is a selected progeny of F 172 open crossed which was hybridized in 1978 at Suphan Buri Field Crops Research Centre. The cross produced 24, 021 seedlings from which 289 were first selected. Subsequent selection from 1979 - 1985 produced a promising clone 4-2-146 E (which was finally named U Thong 1), In 1984, variety U Thong 1 was on farm test against F 140 and Thai 1 which have been recognized as standard varieties. Variety U Thong 1 produced as much yield tonnage as 24.29 per cent higher than Thai 1 variety. It is classified as moderately vesistance to both smut disease and stem borer. This variety is proved suitable for the western region sugarcane belt.
