Abstract

Para rubber seed oil, Parinari oil (Parinari anamense) and tung oil (Aleurites fordii) are semi-drying, drying and quick-drying oils, with Iodine values of 132, 140 adn 160, respectively. Para rubber seed oil when combined with Parinari oil or in ratios of 1:1 , and then combined with 10 percent petroleum resin at 200 C for one hour followed by 260 C for five hours, could be blended into varnishes with viscosities of 125 and 146 poise, respectively. A 1-3 micron printing ink was able to be produced usinga 60 percent base of the varnish blend when mixed with manon iron blue, calcium carbonate, ionol and petroleum distillate, followed by pressing with a three-roll mill. The printing ink derived from teh varnish based on a blend of Para rubber seed oil with Parinari oil was suitable for web printing; the ink derived from teh varnish based on a blend of Para rubber seed oil with Tung oil was suitable for sheet printing. However, the web printing ink was inferior in terms of gloss, smell and drying properties to the sheet printing ink.
