Planting of Kenaf or Jute before Rice under Rainfed Conditions in Northeast Thailand
Abstract
The potential for preceding the wet-season lowland rice crop in Notheast Thailand, with crops of either kenaf or jute, was examined under both Research Station and farming conditions during the period 1983-85. It was demonstrated that crops of both kenaf and jute could be grown before planting of the rice crop. Planting of kenaf or jute should be undertaken at the beginning of the rice crop. Planting of kenaf or jute should be undertaken at the beginning of the wet-season, mid-April to mid-May; harvesting would take place in August. Following cultivation, the rice is transplanted from a seedbed nursery which is normally prepared in early July. The average first crop yield was approximately 1.8 tons ha-1 and that of the second crop rice, approximately 2.6 tons ha-1.
