Development of the Graft Union of Mangoes

Abstract

An anatomical study of the graft-union of mangoes using the varieties 'Kaeo' and 'Nam-dokmai' as the rootstock and scion respectively, showed that a complete union occurred approximately 34 days after grafting, when a modified spliced approach grafting method was used. During the formation of the graft-union about two days after grafting, parenchyma cells were formed in the region afjacent to the scion cambium, with callus tissue beiing observed later. After 26 days callus tissue partially filled the space between the rootstock and scion of the graftunion. As the rootstock was grafted onto established scion, most of the callus cells originated from the scion. the parenchyma cells adjacent to the scion and rootstock differentiated into new cambium cells 10 days after grafting; the new cambium cells grew inward and away from the original cambium of scion and rootstock kuntil a continuous cambial connection of scion and rootstock was formed 34 days after grafting. Notable anatomical differences between the scion and rootstock were observed in relation to shape of cells and some constitutents such as resin content. The lignified wall-scleried in the cortex was the most obvious visible difference.
