Abstract

Coffea arabica Catimor in a high yielding rust resistant variety developed by the Centro de Investigacao das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro (CIPC) in Portugal , during 1950 - 1960 using Hibrido de Timor crossed with Arabica varieties including Caturra, Catuai and S.L. 28. Seed of 28 lines of F2 Catimor was provided to the Thai Department of Agriculture through the USDA in 1974; these lines were planted in Mae Tang District of Chiang Mai Province. In a study of the reaction of F3 Catimor seedlings to Hemileia vastatrix, two lines, H. 306/1 ML 1/3 and H. 528-46 ML 2/10 were found to be highly resistant.
Seed of a further two lines of the F5 and F6 of Catimor was made available by CIPC in 1983. In laboratory testing both lines proved resistant to H. vastatrix.
