Abstract

A comparison trial on hybrid coconut varieties was established at Sawi Horticultural Experimental Station in 1975 with the aim of finding a higher - yielding variety which is more precocious than the local Thai Tall that would be of greater benefit to the farmer.
Four hybirids were imported from the Ivory Coast in 1974 and were trial planted with the local Thai tall as a control.
Seven years preliminary result suggests that P.B. 121 (Sawi Hybrid No.1) is the highest yielding of all these varieties with Thai Tall x West African Tall hybrid ranking the second an average yield 280.7 kg copra/rai with 57.8 nuts/palm, and 197.8 kg copra/rai with 31.7 nuts/palm respectively. The local Thai Tall has so far yielded only 46.2 kg copra/rai with 6.1 nuts/palm.
