Abstract

Sugarcane variety THAI 1 is a selected progeny of F 160 x Co 775 crossed in 1976 at Chai Nat field Crops Research Center. The cross producted 3.968 seedlings from which 160 were first selected. Subsequent selection from 1977-1981 produced a promising line THAI 1. In 1983, variety THAI 1 was on farm tested against F 140 and Q 83 which are popular and recognized as standard varieties in Thailand. Variety THAI 1 produced as much yield tonnage as 15.30% higher than F 140. It is classified as "tolerant" to both smut disease and stem-borer. This variety is proven suitable for the western region sugarcane belt.
