Abstract

Apple production in the Federal Republic of Germany must compete with quality fruit from other countries. The paper reviews the strategy used to improve both apple yield and quality through a combination of breeding for yield, quality and disease resistance, use of dwarf rootstocks, budding techniques, planting systems, cultural practices and harvesting techniques.
