Abstract

Karyotype study of mutated Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana 1, 2 , 3 and  5 varieties from general Kluai Khai variety were made and conducted at the Department of Horticulture, Kasetsart University during March 2003-March  2009. It was found that all 4 matated varieties had the equal number of 22 chromosomes that could be arranged in 11 pairs. Chromosomes of  Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana 1, 2 and 5 were close in size with length ranging from 1.62 to  3.95 m Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana 3 was noticed to have 1.61 to 3.13 m long chromosomes which were smaller than those of the others but about the same size as kluai Khai culfivated variety. As for the chromosome structure, Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana 1 and 2 had an equal number of each type of chromosome 3 pairs of metacentric, 7 pairs of metacentric, 6 pairs of submetacentric and 5 pairs of acrocentric were found. There were only 2 chromosome types, 6 pairs of metacentric and 5 pairs of submetacentric in Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana 3 resembling to Kluai Khai. Moreover, the satellite was also observed on the 1st pair of chromosome in every Kluai Khai Kasetsart Banana varieties whereas only Kasetsart Banana 1 and 3 had satellite on the 2nd pair of chromosome as the same as Kluai Khai.
