Parental Line Selection of Sweet Corn Hybrid Based on Combining Ability Estimates of Inbred Lines.

Nine sweet corn inbred lines were studied to estimate combining ability by using diallel mating design with non-reciprocal combinations at the Songkhla Agricultural Research and Development Centre, in rainy season, 2009. Data for yields namely green weight and yellow weight were recorded and analyzed using an adaptation of Griffing’s Method 4 Model 1. The combing ability estimates of the inbred lines will be used for parental line selection. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA). The GCA estimates were always more important than SCA effects for all yields. High GCA estimates for both yields were observed in CL 0803, CL 0806, CL 0838 and CL 0840, while SCA x CL 0856, CL 0838 x CL 0848 and CL 0840 x CL 0864. The best hybrid, CL 0836 x CL 0840 can be utilized for developing high yield single cross hybrid cultivar which parents gave high GCA and SCA. The high combining ability inbred lines. CL 0836 and CL 0840 can be used as testers for parental line selection in future hybrid program.
