The Weight Reduction Study of Clay Body for Ceramic Jewelry by Using Combustible Filler.
The purposes of this research were to find the result in weight reduction of clay body for ceramic jewelry making by using combustible materials fillers and to test for its fired physical properties. The experiment began by mixing basic clay body for jewelry making. The formula of basic clay body was as follows; Lampang kaolin 25%, soda feldspar 25%, Quartz 25%, Maetan ball clay 25%, and the addition of 8% of zinc oxide as fluxing material. The basic clay body formula was modified by adding 5, 10, 15, and 20% of ground charcoal and paper pulp, which resulted in 8 formulas total. The modified clay bodies were formed into test pieces by extrusion method, fired to the maximum temperature of 1250 degree. Celsius at the rate of 180 degree. Celsius per hour in oxidation atmosphere, and finally the samples were tested for their fired physical properties. The experiment found that clay body with 10% of charcoal added resulted 10% shrinkage rate, 3.98 water absorption, 1,164.64 kg/cm2 bending strength, 2.86 gr/cm3 , and 14.56 % loss on firing. The clay body was plastic enough for forming and fired to smooth and shiny ceramic jewelry products with the weight reduction of 7.47 %, and therefore was suitable for jewelry making.
