Synthesis, Characterization and Crystal Structures of 2,2’-Bipyride Complexes of Chromium(III)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Reaction of CrCl3 · 6 H2O with 2,2’ bipyridine (bipy) in ethanol in the mole ratio of 1:1 and 1:2 at ambient temperature and pressure results in the formation of the cationic complexes [Cr(bipy)(H2O)2Cl2]Cl · H2O (1 · H2O) and [Cr(bipy)2Cl2]Cl · 2 H2O (2 · 2 H2O), respectively. The crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Pccn with a = 6.8781 (6) Å, b = 11.9147 (11) Å, c = 20.2969 (18) Å, and α = β = γ = 90° with Z = 4. 2 crystallized in the triclinic space group P-1with a = 7.0360 (5) Å, b = 12.3914 (10) Å, c = 13.0311 (10) Å, and α = 90.70000 (10)°, β = 93.5140 (10)°, γ = 100.0230 (10)° with Z = 2. The complexes are six-coordinated and have normal planarity. Both complexes were characterized by spectrophotometry and the chromium center appears as an oxidation state of +3 approved by effective magnetic moment.
