Wastewater Management Towards Microbial Degradation of Synthetic Azo Dyes from Tannery Effluent
Main Article Content
Abstract
Industrial waste has the potential to contaminate the soil and groundwater. Globally, the tanning industry is regarded as a potential source of environmental pollution. Inorganic amines are abundant in the tannery industry's by-products. Azo dyes are the primary components of tannery effluent, which negatively impacts aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna. Therefore, the elimination of these dye pollutants is crucial for preventing the contamination of our vulnerable resources. Our research work focused on an efficient ways to clean and regulate azo dye pollution emerged in recent years. Azo dye degrading bacteria were isolated from tannery effluent solid waste and employed for decolorizing azo dye. The isolated strains of bacteria were identified as Bacillus tropicus (OQ799318) and Bacillus paramycoides (OQ799314). The novel bacterial strain exhibited rapid decolorization activity, removing 91% of the yellow azo dyes and 90% of the brown azo dye. The optimum conditions for azo dye degradation was at 10% inoculum concentration, pH 7.0, temperature 37°C, and 48 h. Bacillus tropicus and Bacillus paramycoides can be used as eco-friendly biological expedients for the bioremediation and detoxification of azo dyes used in industries.
