Development of a Behavior Modification Process for Public Health Personnels, Bangpakong Hospital

Abstract

The study was research and development. The objective was to develop a behavior modification process for public health personnels working at Bangpakong hospital. The process of this study were (1) to study problems and needs of public health personnels; (2) to design and construct the behavior modification process comprised 7 components as follows: 1) perception and health assessment, 2) self -assessment, looking for potential and solutions, 3) goal setting, 4) exchange of experience, 5) activities 6) evaluation and 7) therapy; and (3) to evaluate and improve the process. The research sample consisted of 32 public health personnels at Bangpakong hospital who had obesity with uncontrol hypertension or diabetes, or had high level of blood pressure or of blood sugar. The research instruments were (1) a knowledge test (pre and post test) with Kuder Richardson 20 – KR-20 at 0.87, (2) a health behavior skill measurement test with reliability at 0.75 and (3) a satisfaction survey with the Index of Item Objective Congruence (IOC) at 1.00.Statistics employed for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, standard division and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test.
The findings showed that (1) regarding problems and needs of the personnels, 93.33% of the participants need to be trained in food selection, balancing body and proper exercise skills for each individual; (2) the developed process, consisted of 7 components, was approved by experts as being feasible for implementation, with the IOC at 0.97; and (3) from the tests, the knowledge and skills of participants after receiving behavior modification process were higher than before participating in the program (Z=5.06 and Z= 4.59, respectively) at statistical significance 0.00 Last, it was also found that the participants were satisfied with the behavior modification process at the highest level.
