Abstract

The purpose of this study was to study the health status and prevalence of morbidity and
co-morbidities, health behaviors, and risk factors affecting morbidity and co-morbidity among the elderly in southern Thailand. The community cross-sectional survey was conducted in the sample aged 60 years and over, living in Narathiwat province. 517 elderly people were randomly sampled. The data gathering instrument used a questionnaire in which the KR-20 index value was greater than 70 and screening for general health problems. Baseline data were analyzed by descriptive statistic (Chi-square or Fisher-test) and logistic regression analysis used to identify the relationship of risk factors affecting morbidity with the likelihood ratio (Adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR)) and 95% CI.
The results showed that the health status of the most of elderly was obese and metabolic syndrome. The mean BMI was 23.7 kg/m2. The waist circumference of most females had exceeded the Ministry of Health's guidelines (60.8%), and two-thirds had at least one underlying disease. The prevalence of healthy elderly, with at least a morbidity and co-morbidity, were 31.4%, 51.8%, and 16.8%, respectively. The most common elderly morbidity was metabolic syndrome which was led by diabetes and hypertension (57.8 percent and 11.4), respectively. Community area, gender, age range and BMI were statistically significant factors affecting elderly morbidity.
The morbidity among elderly people living in the southern region of Thailand was metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. BMI control, improper health behavior modification, and physical and mental health promotion affect the good health of the elderly in these areas.
