A single group, quasi-experimental, repeated three times measurement aimed to study effects of an end-of-life care program on illness uncertainty and distressing symptoms in patients with lung cancer. Samples of this study were 18 patients who were admitted at Thammasat University hospital. Experimental instrument of this study was an end-of-life care program for patients with lung cancer. Data collection instruments comprised of illness uncertainty instrument and distressing symptoms instrument. The reliability yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of these two instruments were .80 and .72, respectively. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis of variance, and the Friedman Test.
The study's findings revealed that the experimental group's average score on illness uncertainty was significantly lower after receiving the program than before receiving the program in both the immediate and follow-up periods (p < .05). Additionally, the experimental group's median score for distressing symptoms was considerably lower after receiving the program than before receiving the program in both the immediate and follow-up periods (p < .05).
The findings of this study suggest that end of life care program can reduce illness uncertainty and distressing symptoms in end-of-life patients with lung cancer.
