Promoting Empowerment of School and Family in Caring for Persons with Autism in Five Southern Border Provinces

The purposes of this participatory action research were to determine whether it would be feasible for schools to develop curricula that would address the needs of families in providing care for persons with autism, the occupation of persons with autism as well as to empower families and schools to support persons with autism in five southern border provinces: Naradhiwas, Yala, Pattani, Songkla, and Satun. Two groups of samples were created: one group consisted of 100 persons of administrative staff members, teachers from the special development zone of southern boarder provinces, special education centers, vocational education, community colleges, parallel elementary schools, and 77 caregivers from club members who are parents of persons with autism. Samples were selected using purposive sampling in accordance with the necessary requirements. Focus group discussions and workshop meetings were utilized for data collecting to foster creativity in caring for persons with autism. Content analysis was applied in data analysis.
The findings showed that following a program to empower schools and families to care for persons with autism in five southern border provinces, two types of innovations were developed: 1) Teacher personnels developed school parallel short course learning curriculum for persons with autism in schools under the vocational education commission and community college; and 2) Caregivers created innovations that were suitable for each club to increase the effectiveness of parents in caring for persons with autism. These innovations included: 1) The application of improving efficacy of persons with autism (Thai-APDA); 2) E-book: Social Story; 3) Enhanced wisdom Mancala; 4) My book; and 5) Farming on tiled floors.
