Abstract

The purpose of this case control study was to investigate the factors associated with alcohol abstinence among patients receiving treatment for alcohol dependence in Mahasarakham province. Samples were patients with alcohol dependence in community, and general hospitals in Mahasarakham province calculating by WIN PEPI program equaled 204. Five experts verified the questionnaire content used in the research, which was administered to patients receiving hospital treatment for alcohol dependence. Alpha's Cronbach coefficient reliability value was.92. Associated factors were analyzed in relation to alcohol abstinence among patients receiving treatment for alcohol dependence using Binary Logistic Regression statistics.

Results found that the average age of the sample was 44. Eighty-seven percent of them were male. Sixty percent had no history of illness (60.80%). 6.90% of samples used drugs. Smoking is still common among patients receiving treatment for alcohol dependence (55.40%) and family caregivers (88.20%). Associated factors with alcohol abstinence were gender (Adjusted OR 0.229, 95% CI 0.63 – 0.828), cigarette smoking history (Adjusted OR 2.736, 95% CI 1.33 – 5.627), alcohol abstinence activities (Adjusted OR 16.968, 95% CI 2.342 – 122.920), social support (Adjusted OR 3.638, 95% CI 1.430 – 9.254), and motivation (Adjusted OR 0.026, 95% CI 0.007 – 0.104).

Therefore, health care providers play a crucial role in promoting health by developing rehabilitation programs that emphasize family and social support as a source of incentive to help patients receiving treatment for alcohol dependence return to a normal life.
