Abstract

Background and Objective: The infestation of fall armyworms dramatically decreases maize production. Coating seeds with insecticide may protect seedlings during the early growth stages. This research aims to trial seed coating using a PRIME GREEN G106 (PG) polymer combined with the insecticide emamectin benzoate (EB).
Methodology: Maize seeds were coated according to the following treatments (T): (T1) non-coated seeds, (T2) seeds coated with PG, and (T3)–(T7) seeds coated with PG mixed with EB at concentrations of 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0%, to assess seed germination, germination speed, seedling growth, and the absorption of the active ingredient within seedlings.
Main Results: Seed coating with PG mixed with all concentrations of EB showed no statistically significant differences in seed germination compared to non-coated seeds (P > 0.05). However, seed coating with PG mixed with EB at concentrations of 0.05–1.0% showed the most favorable trend in seedling growth compared to the other treatments. Furthermore, the study on active ingredient absorption found that seedlings could uptake the substance from the coated seeds through the transport system during growth.
Conclusions: Coating seeds with PG mixed with 0.05–1.0% of EB can be applied to maize seeds while maintaining germination, germination after accelerated aging, and seedling growth. This will provide preliminary data before testing the efficacy of the active ingredients against fall armyworm infestation.
