Application of smoke waters and karrikin to increase cherry tomato yield grown in greenhouse
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background and Objective: Smoke water is a source of karrikin which is the group of plant growth stimulant. Karrikin derived from the burning of cellulose and hemicellulose which could stimulate seed germination, control lateral branching, and increase chlorophyll content. This study aimed to compare efficiency of smoke waters produced from various agricultural wastes on growth and yield of cherry tomato.
Methodology: Smoke waters were produced from agricultural wastes consisting of rice straw, bagasse, and coconut husk. In addition, smoke water produced from D-xylose which is a small subunit of hemicellulose. The experiment was done in cherry tomato ‘CH154’. Distill water (control), KAR1 (Karrikin) and different types of smoke water were applied onto tomato 3 times by seed soaking and foliar spraying at 3 and 8 weeks after transplanting, respectively. Growth parameters were recorded every week after transplanting and tomato yields were measured after harvest.
Main Results: The application of all types of smoke water and KAR1 increased the percentage of fruit set by 14–21% compared with control. Furthermore, smoke waters derived from coconut husk and D-xylose showed the higher total yield/plant than control 84% and 77%, respectively. The application of all types of smoke water and KAR1 tended to increase the fruit weight and significantly increased fruit size. However, all types of smoke water did not affect the growth consisting of stem height, stem diameter, and number of leaves.
Conclusions: The application of smoke waters has the same effects as karrikin to increase the yield of cherry tomato.
